Osteonecrosis of the Knee

The bones require an active blood supply to remain healthy. When the flow of blood to a specific area of bone is limited, it may result in a knee condition known as osteonecrosis. The articular cartilage that covers the bone is affected by osteonecrosis and may eventually collapse. The ultimate result is the development of painful and debilitating arthritis.

The condition affects people of all ages, but especially those over the age of 60. Osteonecrosis responds better to conservative treatment options when the condition is diagnosed in the early stages. If left untreated, osteonecrosis will continue to cause progressive bone damage. Advanced cases require surgery to repair any damage to the bone.
