Femoroacetabular Impingement (FAI) Syndrome Treatment
When excess bone grows along any of the two bones that form the hip joint, it is the product of a condition called femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) syndrome. This results in irregularly shaped bones that do not join together correctly. If the bones then rub against each other during movement, it can lead to hip damage that may ultimately limit mobility and produce pain and discomfort.
There are three distinct types of FAI, all of which can restrict the range of movement in the hip:
Pincer Type FAI – describes FAI that presents as extra bone extending abnormally over the rim of the acetabulum (hip bone socket). This may result in the labrum (cartilage that rims the outer edge of the acetabulum) being impacted and crushed.
Cam Type FAI – presents as a femoral head that is not round. This means that the femoral head cannot rotate smoothly, and grinding will occur within the acetabulum. Grinding can cause significant damage inside the hip joint if it is not treated.
Mixed Type FAI– If you have both cam and pincer FAI, the condition is known as combined or mixed FAI. Decreased range of movement is likely, along with all other risks associated with cam and pincer FAI.
