What is Intoeing?

Intoeing is the term that is used to describe the feet turning inward when walking or running. The condition is usually identified by parents when babies reach the walking milestone. There are three conditions that may cause intoeing. Metatarsus adductus causes the foot to turn inward, whereas tibial torsion and femoral anteversion cause the shinbone and thighbone to turn inward, respectively.

Your child may not need treatment unless the condition persists beyond the age of eight. However, correcting intoeing is an option when a child is suffering from low self-esteem due to the outward symptoms of intoeing. Conservative treatments include the use of casts and braces. Surgical and other specialized treatment options are also available from Silicon Valley Orthopaedics.

The foot/ankle condition is not painful, and there is no risk of arthritis developing. If your child is experiencing pain, inflammation or discomfort, he or she should be assessed by either Dr. Nic Gay or Dr. Masi Reynolds at our California practice.

What Causes Intoeing?

The three conditions that can result in intoeing may occur independently or as the result of associated orthopedic conditions. It is also possible that the contributing condition is hereditary. There is nothing you could have done to prevent intoeing, given that the condition stems from genetic factors that were present at birth.

Silicon Valley Orthopaedics is here to offer support and treatment options to help your child feel confident when walking or running. You can contact our practice to arrange an evaluation if your child is suffering emotionally or physically from intoeing.

Reach out to Silicon Valley Orthopaedics in California if you have a child who is experiencing pain as a result of turned in feet.
