Baker’s Cyst Treatment

If you have arthritis or suffered from a cartilage tear, it may result in the build-up of fluid that lubricates the joints. When this happens behind the knee, the condition is commonly known as a Baker’s cyst. You may or may not experience knee pain, but a Baker’s cyst often restricts the range of movement when bending the knee.

Silicon Valley Orthopaedics can provide a diagnosis to confirm if the swelling behind your knee is a Baker’s cyst. It is also important to establish the underlying cause of the problem. Diagnosis of a Baker’s cyst is fairly straightforward. Dr. Nic Gay or Dr. Masi Reynolds will shine a light behind the knee to identify the build-up of fluid. Additionally, an ultrasound may help confirm a diagnosis.

There is a very good chance that a Baker’s cyst will subside without treatment. However, at Silicon Valley Orthopaedics, we can drain the cyst and discuss further diagnosis of any underlying injury or illness. In rare cases, swelling behind the knee is caused by a blood clot. This requires immediate attention to reestablish proper blood and oxygen flow through the veins.

Baker’s Cyst & Underlying Causes

While we can offer you immediate relief from a Baker’s cyst at Silicon Valley Orthopaedics, our main concern is identifying the underlying cause. Arthritis or cartilage tears are among the most common issues that may result in a Baker’s cyst. As part of a comprehensive examination at our California practice, we will seek to identify any injury or illness and provide appropriate treatment recommendations.

To learn more about the cause, diagnosis and treatment of a Baker’s cyst, you can contact Silicon Valley Orthopaedics today. We can book your consultation with either Dr. Nic Gay or Dr. Masi Reynolds for a comprehensive examination, where you will have the opportunity to discuss any joint health concerns.
